Two of Atlanta's historically black colleges have significant collections of art by African American artists. Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries each have permanent collections numbering several hundred pieces. Each institution also hosts special exhibitions during the academic year. Here are the highlights of each collection.
Spelman College, the country's oldest historically black colleges's college, exhibits visual art made by women of the African Diaspora. It is the only art museum in the US with that focus. The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is located on campus in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center. The permanent collection features more than 350 works by noted African American artists. The collection includes paintings and sculptures by Elizabeth Catlett, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, Valerie Maynard, and Selma Burke. The museum also contains significant works from Africa, with a concentration on the art of central Africa.
The museum's current exhibition is entitled Multiple Choice: Perspectives on the Spelman College Collection. Faculty, students, alumnae, and friends of the museum have participated in selecting objects from the college's archives for this exhibition. Fifty participants have shared their perspectives and responses to the artwork via recorded video interviews, social media, and other interactive means. Highlights of this exhibition include the works of American artists Faith Ringgold, Elizabeth Catlett, and Sheila Pree Bright, Jamaican artist Edna Manly, and Nigerian artist Marcia Kure. The exhibition runs February 7-May 18, 2013.
Spelman College is located at 440 Westview Drive. Museum hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10am-4pm and Saturday from noon-4pm. Suggested donation is $3.
